Lori Jean, CEO of the biggest LGBT organization in the world, had some huge news to drop on us yesterday. You might have already noticed the first change – a new name. The Center rebranded, switching from The LA Gay and Lesbian Center to the less wordy and more inclusive LA LGBT Center. The new name comes with a brand new logo seen above.

Also announced was a $25 million campaign to expand the Center into the recently acquired space across from The Village at Ed Gould Plaza. The expansion will span more than a full city block in the heart of Hollywood and will serve as the Center’s new headquarters. This massive addition will provide more than 100 affordable housing units for LGBT seniors as well as more beds for homeless LGBT youths. It’s estimated that 20% of the 6,000 youths living on the streets of Los Angeles are LGBT. Food and medical services will also see improvements as a result of the expansion.

The community has already raised $19 million, including a $6.5 million donation from local philanthropist Anita May Rosenstein – the largest personal donation to an LGBT organization in history. The Center has partnered with long time supporter Lily Tomlin to work toward the fundraising goal. Construction on the new campus is expected to break ground in 2016 and take about two years.

Lorri Jean and the LA LGBT Center already make up one of the cornerstones of the worldwide LGBT community and movement. This revolutionary plan will allow them to touch the lives of so many more individuals while acting as a beacon of hope and inspiration for LGBT members everywhere.
