Same-Sex Marriage Ruling in New Jersey

By | October 8, 2013

Same-sex marriage continues to be an uphill battle for the LGBT community. Last month, Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson ruled that gay marriage must be allowed in New Jersey. However, Gov. Chris Christie’s administration quickly announced they would appeal the ruling because state law can’t violate the state constitution.

New Jersey has civil unions for gay couple, just not marriages, which are legal in 13 states.

On October 4th, gay rights advocates asked a New Jersey judge to implement the order, allowing same-sex marriages this month. I believe the judge should remove the ban immediately. Even Vice President Biden recently said, “gay marriage is the issue of our day.”

Lets hope the Christie administration drops their appeal and allow the New Jersey LGBT community to enjoy the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples.

3 Significant Events in LGBT History

By | September 25, 2013

September is a milestone month in LGBT history. Today, I read an article about three different events that happened on September 20. The events happened in three different decades and really helped move the LGBT movement forward and backward (according to how you look at it).

I was very young when the first one took place so I don’t remember much about it but the other two I remember very well.

So what are these three events? Well, in 1973, Tennis superstar Billie Jean King faced Bobby Riggs in the ‘Battle of the Sexes.’ King Won. In 1996, President Bill Clinton announced he would sign the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which recognized married being between a man and a woman. Then, in 2011 “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the US policy on gays serving in the military, was repealed.

Of course, this month Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated at a friend’s same-sex wedding so September continues to deliver.

Check out the entire article about September 20 here. It includes great videos.
